Scandicraft, a new sustainable decorative style

by | May 26. May 2022 | Decoration, Lifestyle

Today I want to talk about a new sustainable decorative style that is being talked about lately. It is the Scandicraft style. A trend that brings together several aspects of its counterpart, the Scandinavian or Nordic style and I will explain below why it resonates so much in POVEDA Biointeriorismo.

The origins of Scandicraft

Scandicraft is a variant of the Scandinavian style. The name is a neologism of the word "Scandinavia" and the particle "craft", which means art or manufacture (as in the term "handcrafted"). These two concepts come together to create a decorative style with a vintage feel. Originally popularized in Nordic countries such as Denmark, Finland and Norway. And it finds its base in ecological and recovered materials. That is why this style has an attractive point for POVEDA Biointeriorismo.

The origin of this movement dates back to the 19th century when minimalism became a trend in interior design. Unlike art deco with its decorative exuberance, Scandinavian furniture has an extreme simplicity: simple shapes with few straight lines; soft pastel colors; metallic delicacy; natural textures such as wood or leather. These elements are combined to create warm and cozy environments that transmit relaxing sensations through their luminescent chiaroscuro.

The major influences of Scandicraft

Scandicraft influences minimalism and pure and simple forms, which have been important influences for designers for decades.

Many people associate the Nordic style with the classically designed furniture of the 1950s and 1960s. This furniture was large, strong and sturdy, but followed a minimalist line. The finishes were either plain or had a light finish with pastel shades that reflected nature. In fact, if you look at today's designers they are types of furniture that can be interpreted as an evolution of the original Nordic style.

The sustainable decoration market has experienced exponential growth since 2008 due to global climate change: we urgently need it as a viable alternative to our consumerist society that will not last forever. That is why I am sure that new trends will continue to incorporate innovative concepts that contribute to a friendlier and more environmentally friendly world.

A sustainable decorative style that you can create yourself

To achieve this sustainable decorative style it is necessary to think about two aspects: the first one is the design and the second one is the materials used. Most people tend to confuse the materials with the design but both are important separately and being so we must analyze them separately before discussing about the final result that will have our decorative work with Scandicraft style.

Here are some tips that you should take into account to inspire your creativity:

  • Use natural fabrics or wood.
  • Use antique or restored furniture.
  • Take inspiration from nature and add elements such as stone, wood, cement or metal.
  • Choose nude colors for your decor. It is always a good option since they will not only combine with the rest of the color accents, but they are also cozy and give amplitude. If you want to know a little more about the secrets of eco-friendly paints, be sure to read our article.
